The Sailing Courses introduce beginners to the art of sailing, after which students will be able to operate a small boat, in inland waters, in light to medium wind and water conditions.
The emphasis is on practical sailing skills alongside a working knowledge of sailing theory.
Successful completion of the course leads to US Sailing’s Small Boat Beginner Sailor Certification.
Each class will consist of one classroom session on the first Friday evening before two, back-to-back weekend sessions, which will be dedicated to practicing on the water.
Graduates are encouraged to join the Rudder Club and practice their freshly-learned skills on the club boats, which are available for a small rental fee ($14)
If you join the club on the back of this course, we will waive the joining fee, saving you $250.
These courses are aimed at adults, but, in some circumstances, more mature minors may attend with their parent(s). Please call the office (904) 264 4094.
Cost: The course is $400.00 per student for the entire four-day course on the St. Johns River with professional group instruction (there is a $50 discount for charter members).

There will be one Friday evening introductory class and two-weekend classes.
The Friday evening introductory class is from 7:00 pm to 8:00 to get to know the instructor and other
students Saturday and Sunday times are 9:00 am to 3:00 pm with a 1-hour lunch break

This depends on weather. On hot days, wear clothing to protect from the Sun. Long sleeve shirts, hats,
sunglasses and sun block are necessary. In cold conditions, you would want jackets and sweaters. In
wetter conditions, some sort of foul weather gear. Remember it is always cooler on the water than is it on
land. If it is windy, there is a significant wind chill even in the summer months. Shoes are a very
important part of sailing. Good shoes that will support you and protect you while moving on uneven
surfaces as well as in shallow water. Sailing gloves are also nice to have.

You will need to bring water to stay hydrated. A small cooler and water bottles are encouraged.

Yes. While we do not expect you to end up in the water there is a very real chance that you could end up
in the water.

You are welcomed to bring your own lunch. You may be tired and not want to leave the premises and relax during lunch. If you prefer not to bring your lunch, we will have enough time to go to a local eatery for lunch as well.

Yes, as part of the class, you will be given a book on How to Sail book. You will not have to have read the book before class. In fact, it might make more sense to read the book after the first class or two.

No, we do not administer any tests. You will receive a small completion of the sailing book. This will have information regarding what you will have learned during the course

We use Flying Scots. These boats are a very stable platform and very comfortable for older and less agile adults.

Yes. Sailing fundamentals are the same in all sailboats. Once mastering the basic skills in these boats, you will be able to transfer these learned skills to any sailboat.

No. This is an entry-level sailing class. It is intended to give you enough practice and information for you to be comfortable sailing on your own. From there you will be able to continue to learn as much as you want.
